As we age, collagen production slows down, our skin becomes less elastic and repeated muscle frowning may create visible lines and wrinkles and depressions within the face. These lines are caused by overactive muscle movement which gradually wear away the collagen in the skin, causing the skin to crease and wrinkles or dimples to appear. These lines are sometimes referred to, depending on location, as crow’s feet, frown lines, forehead furrows, glabella folds, lip lines, mouth drop or chin dimpling.

Botox, offers a safe, non-surgical, non-invasive procedure that is performed on millions of people worldwide to help alleviate such signs of ageing. These injectable agents are used to temporarily diminish or eliminate lines, winkles and dimples on the face by relaxing underlying muscles. Muscle nerve endings are temporarily blocked thereby relaxing them. By reducing muscle movement, the skin stops being creased and is allowed to recover, causing lines to soften and fade away.

Treatment involves injecting very small doses of Botox via an extremely fine needle into the appropriate area, targeting specific muscle groups. This can cause a brief stinging sensation although discomfort is very mild and no anaesthetic is required. There is generally no recovery period and patients are able to directly go back to normal activities.

For deeper lines or full face treatments, Botox is used very successfully in combination with other treatments including dermal filler, Sculptra, DermaRoller and chemical peels.

Wrinkle-relaxing treatments are often used at the same time with dermal fillers or other cosmetic procedures, although in different areas of the face, for an all-over smoothing of wrinkles and facial lines. For example, wrinkle-relaxing treatments may be used on forehead wrinkles, while a dermal filler may be better used to treat lines at the mouth area.

Dermal Fillers -Why should I consider them?

The ageing process is associated with a loss of skin volume and the appearance of static lines i.e. lines that are permanently visible on the face rather than lines caused by movement of muscles. As we age, the hyaluronic acid content of the skin – which is so important for water retention and hydration – decreases. Oil glands become less active and the skin becomes drier, loses fat so becomes less plump, and its youthful texture and glow starts to fade.

Like Collagen injections dermal fillers are used to correct creases, folds or scars and add contour definition to the face and mouth.
